Van Life in the Rockies: Our Biggest Challenge Yet
For lovers of nature and adventure, road-tripping in a van is an attractive idea. It offers a unique opportunity to explore different regions, meet new people, and embrace a more minimalistic lifestyle. However, not all journeys are easy, and challenges do arise. Our experience of Van Life in the Rockies is an example of one such challenge.
The Rockies are a mountain range that stretches over 3,000 miles from British Columbia in Canada to New Mexico in the USA. Its rugged landscape, diverse wildlife, and crystal-clear rivers make it one of the most beautiful regions in North America, and a popular destination for campers, hikers and road-trippers.
As we set out on our van journey into the Rockies, we were filled with excitement and anticipation. We had read articles, watched videos, and done extensive research on the region. However, we were not prepared for the challenges that lay ahead.
The first obstacle we encountered was the weather. Being a mountain range, the Rockies experience extreme temperature fluctuations, unpredictable weather patterns and sudden storms. We had to learn quickly how to prepare for unexpected weather changes. Our van was equipped with a propane heating system, blankets, and a reliable weather app.
The second challenge was navigating roads that were not van-friendly. Steep cliffs, narrow roads, and sharp curves were a constant test of our driving skills. We had to be extra cautious and use our instincts to navigate through treacherous terrains.
The third challenge was dealing with the altitude. The Rockies are home to some of the highest peaks in the US, with Mt. Elbert reaching over 14,000 feet. Altitude sickness is a real concern, and symptoms can range from mild headaches to serious respiratory problems. We had to take precautions by drinking plenty of water, taking breaks, and being conscious of our breathing.
Despite the challenges, we persevered and experienced some of the most beautiful landscapes we had ever seen. We camped under clear skies, fished in pristine rivers, hiked to breathtaking peaks, and met amazing people along the way. We learned important lessons about preparation, safety and the power of resilience.
Van Life in the Rockies was more than just a scenic road trip; it was a test of our character and ability to adapt to different situations. We learned to respect nature’s power and to be grateful for its beauty. It was an experience that will stay with us for a lifetime, and we recommend it to anyone who craves adventure and a challenge.
