FINNISH SAUNA

We finally got to experience the traditional Finnish sauna, and it did not disappoint.

What makes the Finnish sauna experience different from other saunas?

We Tried the FINNISH SAUNA: Rolling in the Snow

There is no denying that sauna culture is a big part of Finland’s heritage. It’s a tradition that has been passed down through generations and one that is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. But have you ever heard of rolling in the snow after a sauna session? We recently tried it, and here’s what happened.

First of all, it’s important to understand that the Finnish sauna experience is something entirely different from the saunas that are typically found in other parts of the world. The Finnish sauna is often located in its own separate building, known as a “saunamaja,” and is heated by a wood-burning stove.

The temperature inside the sauna can range from 70°C (158°F) to 100°C (212°F), depending on personal preference. You begin by sitting inside the sauna, sweating and relaxing, before heading outside for a quick dip in the icy waters of a nearby lake, river or sea. This is then followed by rolling in the snow.

Rolling in the snow might sound like a strange and somewhat painful experience, but it’s actually a key part of the Finnish sauna tradition. Rolling in the snow is said to help improve circulation and have a rejuvenating effect on the mind and body. Plus, it’s a lot of fun.

Our experience of rolling in the snow was not quite what we had expected. After enjoying the heat of the sauna, we stepped outside into the freezing cold air and made our way towards the nearby snowbank. We started rolling, and at first it was exhilarating. We laughed and joked with each other as we did it, feeling like we were partaking in some bizarre and ancient ritual.

But as the cold began to seep into our bones, we started to feel less and less enthusiastic. Rolling in the snow quickly lost its charm, and we found ourselves yearning to return to the warmth of the sauna. As we ran back inside, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment for having tried something new and challenging.

If you’re ever in Finland, rolling in the snow after a sauna session is something that is definitely worth trying at least once. It’s an experience that is unique to the country, and it’s a great way to fully immerse yourself in the local culture. Just be prepared for the cold and don’t forget to bring your sense of humor!
