Extreme Travel Somalia

Exploring more of Somalia and travelling to the coast!

What are some of the primary tourist attractions in Mogadishu, Somalia?

Somalia is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is known for political instability and violence that has plagued the nation for the past few decades. However, there are still individuals who are adventurous enough to visit this country, and they refer to themselves as extreme travelers. In this article, we will take a look at what it would be like to spend one day as a tourist in Somalia, courtesy of Extreme Travel Somalia.

The first thing you would notice in Somalia is its flavorful culture. After arriving at Mogadishu International Airport, we were welcomed by the bustling streets filled with people adorned in vibrant traditional garments. Our tour guide wasted no time in taking us to one of the city’s primary tourist attractions, the National Museum of Somalia. In this museum, you can discover the rich history of Somalia, which includes artifacts from the pre-colonial era and post-colonial era.

After visiting the National Museum, we headed out to the iconic monuments in the city center, which illustrate the Somali struggle for independence. These monuments include the 80-feet tall Obelisk, which is unique in its design and is a symbol of freedom, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which commemorates the Somali soldiers who fought for independence from colonial powers.

We then proceeded to venture outside of the capital city, and our next stop was the ancient port of Merca. This port has been around for over 1,000 years and is a testament to the maritime practices, which have been part of Somalia’s culture since ancient times. The view of the Indian Ocean from here is nothing short of breathtaking.

We concluded our day by going to Bakara Market, the largest market in Somalia, and the most significant open-air market in East Africa. You can find anything from fresh produce, textiles, and handmade traditional jewelry to more modern items like electronics and clothing.

In conclusion, a day spent in Somalia as a tourist with Extreme Travel Somalia is an unforgettable experience. The country’s culture, history, and heritage are remarkable, and the hospitality of the people is nothing less than heartwarming. However, it is important to acknowledge the risks involved in visiting a country that has suffered decades of conflict and to do so with the guidance of professionals who know the country well.
